Shipwreck stories from the Far South: Underwater Archaeology in Argentina
The session offers a guided journey through the maritime history of Argentina at the southern edge of the American continent. Indigenous communities sailed these waters for millennia, shaping early traditions of navigation and survival. European explorers later followed, drawn by the search for new routes between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
Dr. Elkin will also introduce the underwater archaeology initiatives led by Argentina’s National Secretary of Culture. These efforts span more than three decades and focus on the research and preservation of historic shipwrecks from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries.
As the founder of Argentina’s first Underwater Archaeology Programme and a leading researcher with CONICET, Dr. Elkin brings a wealth of knowledge in maritime and coastal archaeology. Her academic work at the University of Buenos Aires and her training programmes across Latin America through UNESCO further enrich this expertise.
Designed as part of our premium programming for Qatar Creates members, this event offers a unique opportunity to learn, connect, and engage with international experts in underwater cultural heritage.
