Scully & Osterman Lecture 6: Anatomy: The Work of Mark Osterman
Date: 19 January, 2026
Time: 6:00-8:00 PM
Location: Fire Station cinema
In this lecture, the evolution of Mark’s most recent series “Anatomy” is covered, including his earliest use of historic photographic processes and the influences that lead up to this unusal body of work. The imagery is based on dismantling a 1923 model T Ford car. Mark observed that many of the old parts and the reasons for replacing them were metaphores for human body parts at a time he was dealing with his 95 year old father going through medical issues. More about human anatomy than an old car, the work is visually powerful and provocotive. These images were made using the 1850s–1870s era wet collodion negative process. The glass plate negatives were then inverted digitally for the production of digital pigment prints, a technical marriage spanning over 150 years.
