What does Cairo in 1900 sound like when it is performed live? Oxford Maqam, a pioneering ensemble of vocalists and musicians, specialize in the music of 19th and 20th century Egypt. Renowned for their innovative revival of classical Arabic music, they recreate historical works through extensive research and period recording techniques, bringing lost musical traditions to contemporary audiences.

Prof. Martin Stokes is a leading ethnomusicologist and King Edward Professor of Music at King's College London, internationally recognized for his research on music, identity, and cultural life in the Middle East and beyond.
Dr. Bashir Saade is a lecturer at the University of Stirling whose work bridges Arabic musical heritage, sound studies, and the revival of early twentieth-century Middle Eastern music. He is an Arabic nay flute musician.
Dr. Sophie Frankford is an anthropologist of music and Research Associate at King's College London, whose research focuses on Egyptian musical cultures, archives, and the social life of music in the Middle East.
Tarik Beshir is a vocalist and oud player specializing in the music of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Ottoman Egypt and its faithful revival.
Walid Zaido is a percussionist specializing in classical and oriental music, with performances across the Middle East and Europe.
