Aru Hatto / Al-Khatt: Calligraphy Meets Fashion

Al-Khatt (Arabic: الخط), meaning “The Line” in Arabic calligraphy, is reimagined here in katakana as “Aru Hatto,” merging Arabic heritage with Japanese artistry. This 4-day workshop invites participants to immerse themselves in Japanese calligraphy (shodō) and contemporary fashion design. Under the guidance of fashion designer Sayuri Kurotsu and calligrapher Minami Shimizu you will explore brush techniques, experiment with everyday objects to create unique calligraphic styles, and translate your designs onto fabric. The highlight of the workshop is the creation of a personalized hijab — a piece that blends cultural tradition, personal expression, and modern style.
